This Victron BatteryProtect disconnects the battery from non-essential loads before it is completely discharged (which would damage the battery) or before it has insufficient power left to crank the engine.
The BatteryProtect is a uni-directional device. It can only deal with current in one direction, so either current to a load or current from a charger, but not both currents at the same time. In addition to this, current can only flow from the battery terminal to the load terminal. In case of use with a load, the battery connects to the battery terminal, and in case of use with a charger, the charger connects to the battery terminal.

Sizing your BatteryProtect
You need to calculate the loads that you're going to have controlled by the device, times 1.25 to get the correct Amps. If you have <50A of anticipated loads, get the 65A model, etc. You want the version that is equivalent to your anticipated loads x 1.25. Oversizing is not an issue, if you anticipate bigger loads in the future, other than footprint of the device and cost.
The BatteryProtect is available in 12/24 V (65, 100 or 220A) and 48 V (100 A).
